At first, real-world trading took place informally. "You might buy some gold from a person you know at school," Jacob Reed, known as a  OSRS gold prolific creator of YouTube videos on RuneScape who goes by Crumb, wrote within an email message to me. Lateron, demand for gold outstripped supply and some players became full-time gold farmers, or players who create an in-game currency that they can sell to real-world currency.

Internet-age miners have always been part of the massively multiplayer internet games or MMOs that included Ultima Online as well as World of Warcraft. They even toiled away in some text-based virtual worlds, claimed Julian Dibbell, now a technology transactions lawyer who once wrote about virtual economies in his journalistic work.

In the past of these gold miners were primarily found in China. Many hunkered in makeshift factories, where they slayed virtual ogres and looted their corpses during 12-hour shifts. There were even stories of Chinese government using prisoners to create gold farms.

In RuneScape the black market industry that was backed by gold farmers was quite small until 2013. Some players were unsatisfied with how much the computer game had changed since it was first launched in 2001. They asked Jagex to bring back a prior version. Jagex released a version from its archive, and users were eager to play what would come to be known as Old School RuneScape.

Many of these players were like Mobley. They played RuneScape in their teens and remember fondly the angular graphics and kitschy soundtrack. While these 20- and 30 year olds had plenty of time when they were younger however, they were now juggling responsibilities beyond homework.

"People have jobs now they have families to consider," said Stefan Kempe, another popular creator of videos on RuneScape with close to 100,000 subscribers, and goes under the nickname SoupRS on an interview. "It's an obstacle to the amount of time they can spend playing all day long."
