WELLINGTON Scott Darling Hurricanes Jersey , Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Falling international dairy prices are going to blow a hole of 6 billion NZ dollars (4.6 billion U.S. dollars) in New Zealand's economy, experts warned Wednesday after dairy giant Fonterra slashed its payout to farmers.
Fonterra Co-operative Group Ltd. cut its forecast payout for the 2014-2015 season from 5.30 NZ dollars (4.07 dollars) per kilogram of milk solids to 4.70 NZ dollars (3.61 dollars).
Fonterra Chairman John Wilson conceded that although farmers were expecting this lower forecast, the revision would put pressure on their farming business budgets.
"Falling oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty in Russia and Ukraine, and subdued demand from China as it continues to work through inventory are all contributing to ongoing volatility and weak demand," Wilson said in a statement.
Dairy prices plunged to their lowest point since August 2009 at last week's fortnightly GlobalDairyTrade auction.
New Zealand's key dairy export, whole milk powder Elias Lindholm Hurricanes Jersey , fell by 7.1 percent in the Fonterra-run GlobalDairyTrade auction to 2,229 U.S. dollars a tonne, dragging down the average dairy commodity price by 1.1 percent to 2,513 U.S. dollars a tonne.

"We've calculated that around a quarter of dairy farmers are facing some business risk this season at the 4.70 NZ dollars milk price. "We don't expect milk prices to recover in the first half of 2015. So the start of the season next year in June will be when things could get really tough for farmers," said Mackle.
Radio New Zealand reported the loss in earnings would equate to 2.5 percent to 3 percent of New Zealand's gross domestic product.
Earlier Wednesday, Finance Minister Bill English said the fall in dairy prices would make the government's aim of returning to an operating surplus this fiscal year much more difficult.
The plunge in the forecast payout would create "an economic black hole," highlighting the country's over-reliance on a single industry, the main opposition Labour Party warned.
