NEW YORK -- Thanks to a recent run of improved play, the Colorado Rockies figure their team will be intact after Mondays trade deadline. Herman Edwards Jersey .The surprising Rockies are within striking distance of a wild-card spot, and it seems theres no sell-off coming this season. At least that was the clubhouse consensus following Sundays 6-4 loss to the New York Mets.We feel close to each other, so I dont think there will be any changes, slugger Carlos Gonzalez said. We are playing good ball, so it makes it easier for the club to continue to put confidence in this club and each player in this room.Colorado nearly completed a season sweep of the defending NL champions, but let it slip away. Boone Logan gave up a go-ahead, three-run homer to Neil Walker in the seventh inning that rallied the Mets.Gonzalez hit a tying double in the fifth and a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh off winner Jerry Blevins (4-1). Daniel Descalso had two RBI singles for the Rockies (52-53), who had won five in a row and nine of 10.Just last year, Colorado traded star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki in the days before the non-waiver deadline. This summer, the outlook feels different, the future more promising. Were playing really well. Its really exciting, where were at right now, second baseman DJ LeMahieu said. I see us keeping it rolling, too.We believe in ourselves. You cant fake believing in it, and we believe in it.After the first pitch was delayed 38 minutes by rain, Chad Bettis recovered from a shaky start and yielded three runs in six innings. He retired his final 10 batters (five on strikeouts) as Colorado -- long a wasteland for pitchers -- broke the club record with its 20th quality start this month. Its huge for us, especially for our starting staff, and we just have to keep it rolling and see what we can do, Bettis said. We know that whoever is going out there on any given day is going to get the job done.Walker also had an RBI triple, extending his recent tear at the plate, and Jeurys Familia rebounded from consecutive blown saves. New York sustained another costly injury, this one to shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, but snapped a four-game skid that matched its longest this season.Playing without ailing slugger Yoenis Cespedes, the Mets averted a four-game sweep and finished 1-6 against the Rockies this year. Before that, New York took 11 straight from Colorado -- including a 7-0 mark last season. Its a huge win for us, manager Terry Collins said.Alejandro De Aza walked with one out in the seventh and, one out later, James Loney drew a 10-pitch walk from Logan (1-1). Walker drove his 17th homer to left-center, pumped his fist after crossing the plate and eventually came out for a curtain call.Logan had not allowed a home run since Peter Bourjos connected for St. Louis on June 9 last year. The left-handers streak lasted 45 2/3 innings.Hes been close to perfect this year, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. To go 5-2 on this road trip, I think our confidence is about as high -- certainly as high as its been all year.Addison Reed struck out three in a one-hit eighth, and Familia fanned two in a perfect ninth for his major league-leading 37th save in 39 attempts.PLAY AT THE PLATEGonzalez tried to score from third with two outs in the fifth on a pitch that got past Rene Rivera, but plate umpire Jeff Kellogg ruled the Mets catcher made the tag in time as both players dove headlong toward the plate. After a replay review, the call stood. I was definitely safe. I dont know what they were looking at, Gonzalez said.FOR STARTERSMets All-Star Noah Syndergaard threw a career-high 118 pitches over six innings. Bettis matched his career best with eight strikeouts. Both pitchers are from Texas and they train together in the offseason. It was fun, Bettis said.TRAINERS ROOMRockies: Rookie SS Trevor Story sat out with a jammed left thumb that he injured Saturday night. Story, who began the day leading the NL with 27 home runs, said his goal is to return Tuesday at home against the Dodgers. He might have an MRI on Monday after the Rockies return home, the team said. ... Slumping 3B Nolan Arenado was out of the lineup for rest but entered on defense in the seventh.Mets: Cabrera hurt his left knee while scoring from first base on Walkers two-out triple in the first.UP NEXTFollowing a day off, Colorado begins an eight-game homestand Tuesday night. RHP Jon Gray (7-4, 3.94 ERA) pitches against Los Angeles, looking to improve his 4-0 record at Coors Field. Gray has gone seven innings and allowed no more than one run in three straight starts, but has a 6.55 ERA in two outings against the Dodgers this year. The fault, he believes, is that they were too defensive in Mohali. It didnt seem Moeen Ali was too defensive when he was caught at deep backward square in the first innings, or mid-on in the second. And it didnt seem Jos Buttler was too defensive when he was caught at extra cover in the first innings and deep midwicket in the second. The same might be said about Ben Stokes first-innings dismissal, when he charged down the pitch and was stumped, or Joe Roots, when he missed an attempted pull against the first ball of spin he faced. But Bayliss is convinced that the secret of Englands success is to be found in them playing more positive - and, specifically, less defensive - cricket.I thought we gifted them a number of our wickets, Bayliss said, as he reflected on the Test. Weve got to make them work a little harder. When we have been a little bit more defensive, we look like wickets waiting to happen. As soon as were a little bit more positive, rotating the strike and hitting a boundary when the opportunity comes, it puts pressure on the opposition.Yes, it might get you out once or twice. But with the batting order weve got, theres going to be a number of guys that do score runs, and that puts some pressure on the opposition. We all know what Bayliss means, of course. He means that bowlers can be hit off a length or close fielders pushed back. He means that, if batsmen can make the bowlers lives uncomfortable, they are unable to go on the attack and batting becomes more straightforward. It might be relevant, though, that the greatest run-scorer in Englands Test history is the most defensive player in the side. And it might be relevant that, while England have tried several aggressive opening partners for Alastair Cook, it has been Haseeb Hameed, the man with the tightest defensive technique, who looks most likely to fill the spot on a permanent basis.Might the approach of Bayliss and Cook be at odds here? While Cook called upon his team to block their way to safety in Vizag, Bayliss always seems inclined to take the more aggressive option. Might we be coming to the time when this side - Cooks for so long - is changing in nature and needs a different leader to ensure a clear message? It is too soon to say for sure, but they do seem to have a notably different ethos to batting and if there is one thing a dressing room desires, it is clarity.Bayliss has been successful in a couple of important areas. He has created an environment in which his teams feel both relaxed and motivated - which is probably the key role of a coach at this level - and he has, in limited-overs cricket, established a clear ethos: all-out attack. And while the change in approach in limited-overs cricket may have begun just before Bayliss took charge - Paul Farbrace was stand-in coach for the watershed series against New Zealand - he has consolidated and improved it. Wendell Smallwood Jersey. He deserves credit for those things. But the longer he has been in office, the more the faults become apparent. For a start, he has little idea of the best players in county cricket. He is not really to blame for this - the England schedule is unrelenting and there is no way he can become steeped in the domestic game as an international coach should be - but it is a reason why his appointment was, in some ways, flawed. Maybe it is why England seem to pick their spinners by looking at the batting averages. His approach to support coaches is also questionable. While there are good motivations for reducing the number of support staff travelling with the squad - the aim was to make the dressing room a little quieter, the message to the players a bit more consistent and to encourage them to think for themselves more - it has also had less welcome consequences. The absence of a full-time fielding coach, for example (Bayliss and Farbrace now lead the fielding sessions), might well be one of the reasons that discipline has become so inconsistent, while the improvement of the spinners (especially Adil Rashid) since the short-term appointment of Saqlain Mushtaq begs the question: why do England not have access to such expertise more often? Most of all, Baylisss approach to Test cricket looks unsophisticated. In a format of the game where patience and discipline have always been important, he instead preaches the virtues of aggression and positivity. Instead of building the batsmens games from a defensive base - like Hameed - he seems more inclined to stuff the line-up with sufficient aggressive players and allrounders that the inevitable failures of some can be mitigated by others. At times, Bayliss sounds like the coach shouting: Score at 10 an over, but dont get out. At times, he seems like the man driving home as fast as he can to get through the fog.Can that approach work? Its entertaining, for sure, and it may bring the best out of some players. But as they have found in Australia of late, the best Test batsmen are not necessarily the ones with the greatest array of strokes or the ability to hit the ball furthest. They are ones who can see off the new ball and have the technique to play the spinning one. They are the ones who know which balls to play and have the patience and confidence to weather the tough periods. They are ones who have the defensive techniques that allow them still to be at the crease when the poor ball is delivered. But, not for the first time, it seems England have embraced an Australian approach - on this occasion, an overly aggressive attitude to batting - just as the rest of the world has realised its drawbacks.
