Tere are 3 main defenses that go on PoE Goods top of your daily life -- Armour, Evasion, and Energy shield. Elemental resistances begin with 0 percent and as you advance, more resistance is needed for them to be capped (for example your resistances will be -60% once you hit late sport and also have no +% to x immunity stats in your gear ). Capped resistances is a must for each personality which goes to the late game (Except chaos resistance, which at -60% is not deadly at all).

A little more about guards -- Armour will force you to take reduced physical damage from hits, Evasion will provide you opportunity to avoid harm completely and Energy shield will provide you longer efficient hp (3000hp + 3000 Energy shield gives you 6000 powerful hp).

Together with Acrobatics keystone from the Passive skill tree, evasion provides you pretty large opportunity to avoid taking any damage at all, but it's one of the most unreliable defensive mechanisms (because few unlucky hits can take you out instantly) -- that is why it's not as popular in hardcore.

Energy shield (associated with intellect ) is a defensive mechanism which has been meta until 3.0. Relied upon it as effective hp that was really high. Combine that with Basalt Flask and Granite Flask and you still have a fantastic quantity of armour with large hp that is effective.
