With the aid of the townsfolk of Tristram, such as the blossom Deckard Cain along with the witch Diablo 4 Gold, the participant delves farther, beating many strong demons like the Butcher. A cutscene reveals the protagonist taking Diablo's Soul Stone and plunging it into his brow. It is unknown at the time why he decides to do this, but it is supposed he's either corrupted by its existence or is attempting to contain Diablo in himself.

The opening cinematic of the game reveals the protagonist from the first Diablo game, today called The Dark Wanderer, has lost the battle against Diablo. He seeks to revive Hell's other evils, Baal and Diablo's Brothers Mephisto. Diablo tricks a man named Marius into regaining Baal's Soul Stone, but the archangel Tyrael, Aspect of Justice, tasks him with bringing the rock to the Hellforge and ruining it. The participant, working with Tyrael intermittently, follows in the footsteps of The Dark Wanderer, trying to halt the return of their evils. On the way, the player defeats against several lesser evils, but eventually The Dark Wanderer succeeds in resurrecting Mephisto and regaining his kind as Diablo. The player is able to conquer both and ruin their Soul Stones from the Hellforge.

In Diablo 2's expansion, Baal, the last remaining wicked, tips Marius to giving him his Soul Stone. This permits him to return to full power, and he begins a siege on the temple that houses the Worldstone. The player character travels to this temple, helping to fend off the demonic hosts, and finally confronts Baal in the throne room. Although the protagonist proved victorious, Baal is still able to corrupt the Worldstone, leaving Tyrael with no other choice but to destroy it.

Following a lengthy, 12-year wait, Blizzard finally released Diablo 3. Fans find there is a gap between Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, and together with all the three prime evils defeated, the world was in peace. All of this changes, however, when a falling star crashes to the old palace in Tristram (the same cathedral from Diablo), also risen dead begin pouring out. Diablo 3 gives a lot of context to the events of Diablo. It is shown that the archbishop Lazarus turned him to Diablo and kidnapped the oldest son of King Leoric. The unknown warrior that the player controls during the course of the game is actually Aiden, the king's youngest son. This means that during the course of Diablo, the personality has to kill the corrupt spirit of his father as the Skeleton King and his brother as Diablo.

The player character arrives seeking stop the horde of undead flowing from it and to learn the mysteries of the star. After beating the spirit of the formerly slain Skeleton King, the protagonist finds the fallen star is a man. It revealed that this man is none besides Tyrael, Justice's Aspect from Diablo 2. Together with Tyrael and Leah, Deckard Cain's niece, the protagonist discovers a cult that brings to manifestation the lower evils Belial and Azmodan. The player then discovers that Leah's mother, Adria the witch (from Diablo), is still living.

Adria advises the team that to be able to defeat the forces of Hell, they must craft the Dark Soul Stone that is effective at trapping seven Lords of Hell within it. The hero, Tyrael, and Leah proceeded to accomplish this, trapping The souls of Belial and Azmodan in addition to another five formerly defeated evils (Diablo, Andariel, Duriel, Mephisto, and Baal). She shows that she has in fact served Diablo all along, which she birthed Leah along with Adrian, the protagonist from the first game buy Diablo Immortal Gold, who had Diablo's soul within him. This Diablo contains the greater and lesser evils of Hell's spirits, making him strong. He storms heaven, nearly claiming victory, but the player personality with the help of Tyrael and the other Angels is able to defeat him.
