A Basic Guide to Jewelry Polishing Tumblers

A Basic Guide to Jewelry Polishing Tumblers

There are two types of jewelry tumblers

Tumblers can be used in many industries. Different types of tumblers work well for different purposes. Vibratory and Rotary tumblers are the main types that are specifically used for polishing jewelry. Although magnetic tumblers are used in jewelry making, they are less common. Since I have never used one, I don't have any useful information.

Vibratory tumblers

The jewelry vibratory tumblers are usually larger and can produce a higher volume of product. They are noisy and take up a lot of space. Because they require more steel shot, they are more costly to purchase and maintain over time.

Rotary tumblers

Rotary tumblers are typically smaller and quieter than vibratory ones, and they can be more affordable. For most jewelry makers, a rotary tumbler is a good choice. A vibratory tumbler is not necessary unless you are producing large quantities of jewelry or have a large workspace. A vibratory tumbler may work well for your spouse if he is a professional shooter who likes to do his shell reloading himself.

How a Rotary tumbler works

A jewelry rotary tumbler's action is similar to ocean waves at a beach. Seashells and sand are pushed against each other by the constant churning waves. Sand particles in the water cause friction to polish stones and seashells. This is how seaglass is made. You can also make your own cultured saltwater glass with your rotary tumbler. In the next section, I will talk more about this.

Tumbling Media

There are many types of tumbling media available on the market. Each one is designed for a specific purpose. For cleaning wire jewelry, I recommend using a jeweler's mix of stainless steel shot such as this one. The jeweler's mix will contain two to three different types of stainless steel pellets. These different shapes will reach every corner of your jewelry and give it a consistent high shine.
