This almost was not the case as presented in the latest episodes of the ESPN/Netflix documentary “The Last Dance”, where Jordan describes how he initially did not want to sign with Nike. When asked “Did you have a shoe company that you wanted to go with?” Jordan instantly responded with “Adidas”.

Adidas were described as being 'dysfunctional' in the 1980s and Adidas reps said at the time: “We'd love to have Jordan, we just can't make a shoe work,” according to the series.Jordan acknowledged the fact that he had to be convinced to take a business meeting with Nike by his mother, as it was not the dominant brand it is today. Nike offered Jordan a US$500000-per-year deal ($825047) for five years through its Air Jordan partnership, which began in 1984.

Nike made this big pitch,” Jordan said, adding that his father told him, “You'd have to be a fool not taking this deal. This is the best deal.” David Falk, Jordan’s sports agent, said recently in an interview with current NBA player Kevin Durant “He didn’t want to go. He didn’t know anything about it, didn’t like the shoes, didn’t want to go.”In the early 1980s, Converse were the biggest shoe brand in the NBA. They had been the official shoe for the Olympics as well as signing huge basketball stars at that time like Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. “And Adidas had everybody else that mattered,” Falk said. “And I thought that Nike was the hungriest for Michael, that they needed him the most, that they would do the most.”

According to the documentary, Nike had projected to sell US$3 million (almost NZ$5 million)dollars worth of Air Jordan's in its first three years. Nike actually sold US$126 million (NZ$208 million) in Air Jordan's its first year. The original Air Jordan sneakers were produced exclusively for Michael Jordan in early 1984, and released to the public in 1985. Forbes reported that Nike has since paid Michael Jordan over US$1.3 billion in the Air Jordan deal.
