Tales of “Tiger Women” from Ancient China

Tales of “Tiger Women” from Ancient China

In ancient China, Confucian traditions required women to be gentle and obedient. According to “The Book of Rites,” a collection of texts mainly published in the Han dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE) on the society and politics of the Zhou era (1046 – 256 BCE), unmarried women must obey their fathers, while married women were supposed to be subservient to their husbands and obey their sons if their husbands died. Wives who failed to meet the requirement would be called “female tigers,” generally a pejorative term for tough, imperious, or “unreasonable” women — similar to the modern term “tiger mom,” though not exclusive to parents. To get more news about women in ancient china, you can visit shine news official website.

Throughout history, many women gained — often unfair — reputations as intractable. Much of this stemmed from the sexism of patriarchal ancient Chinese society. A closer look reveals most of the women labeled “female tigers” merely stepped in when their husbands scuffled with others, or disliked them visiting prostitutes and taking concubines. Here are some of the most famous “tiger women” from ancient China:
Zhuan Zhu was one of the “Four Assassins” of ancient China, each of whom became famous for killing a tyrant. Born in the Spring and Autumn period (770 – 476 BCE), he was hired by Prince Guang of the State of Wu to assassinate the Wu king. Prince Guang arranged a dinner with the king and Zhuan disguised himself as a servant, hid a knife in the belly of a cooked fish, and stabbed the king to death as he served the fish to him. The king’s bodyguards killed Zhuan at the scene as he tried to make his escape.

But this supposedly fearless assassin was most afraid of his wife. According to The Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue, a historical record from the Eastern Han dynasty (25 – 220), when Wu Zixu, an official serving Prince Guang, met Zhuan for the first time, an enraged Zhuan was fighting ruffians on the street. But when Zhuan’s wife appeared, and asked him to stop fighting and return home, to everyone’s surprise, he immediately ended his combat and left with her.

Surprised, Wu asked Zhuan why he was so obedient to a woman, to which he replied: “I am second to just one person, but I am above all the others.” Hearing that, Wu concluded that Zhuan was brave, but not reckless, and so recommended him to Prince Guang for the assassination mission.

Though details of Zhuan’s wife are sparse, including even her surname, she was recorded as a “tigress” in official records, while Zhuan was labeled “the first henpecked man in history” by scholars in later dynasties.

The prime minister’s wife who refused the emperor

Fang Xuanling was prime minister under the reign of Emperor Taizong in the Tang dynasty (618 – 907), and his wife, surnamed Lu, had a reputation for being virtuous and loyal. According to The New Book of Tang, an official history finished in the Song dynasty (960 – 1279), when Fang fell severely sick and thought he would soon die, he told Lu: “I am dying, but you are still young. Do not live in widowhood. Find another person, and have a good life with him.” However, Lu refused and even poked one of her own eyes out as a symbol of her loyalty to Fang and vowed she would never marry again.

Yet in numerous folk tales, Lu is described as a stubborn and shrewish woman; her obstinacy even birthed the phrase chicu, or eat vinegar, which means to be jealous of a love rival and is still in use today.

According to The Anecdotes of the Emperors, Ministers, and Common Men, a novel by writer Zhang Zhuo recording anecdotes in the Tang dynasty, Fang was so afraid of Lu that he didn’t take any concubines, a scandal in those ultra-patriarchal times.

Upon hearing of Lu’s influence, the Taizong Emperor decided to interfere and awarded Fang a concubine. Despite the emperor’s order, Lu forbade the concubine from joining their family. The emperor was enraged by Lu’s disobedience and summoned her to court, telling her to drink a cup of deadly poison or accept the concubine. Lu drank the liquid without hesitation.

But she didn’t die. The emperor laughed. He told Lu the cup contained only vinegar —it had been a test of her nerve. The emperor was so impressed by Lu’s principled nature that he revoked the award of Fang’s concubine and never interfered in their marriage again.

HOW A NORTHEASTERN DEGREE IN BUSINESS EMPOWERED

Temidola Ikomi, a 2017 graduate of the D’Amore-McKim School of Business, really missed the Northeastern community, so she joined Women Who Empower. To get more news about 国产三级在线, you can visit our official website.

Ikomi wanted to build new connections with like-minded women who wished to help each other grow and might have their own businesses, she says, because she is a co-founder of an African-inspired fashion brand in Nigeria, her home country.

This year Ikomi was honored with a 2022 Innovator Award, presented by the Women Who Empower, in the young alumnae undergraduate category along with a $22,000 cash prize. She entered the competition last year as well, but didn’t win.

“It shows that being an entrepreneur doesn’t mean that you are going to give up when you don’t get what you want. You just keep on pushing and pushing,” Ikomi says. Together with her mother and two sisters she owns a Nigerian fashion brand called Irawo Studio. Irawo means “stars” in Yoruba, one of the three main languages spoken in the country. They always knew they wanted to do something in the fashion world, Ikomi says.

“Fashion has been a great way for me to express how I feel, my identity without necessarily saying anything,” she says. “We all do love fashion. We all also want to embrace our Yoruba culture, [and] that’s something we’re able to do with a modern twist.”

Ikomi was born in Kano, in the northern part of Nigeria, and grew up between Lagos, Nairobi, Kenya, and South Africa because of her father’s travels in corporate banking. She attended a number of international schools and became familiar with meeting people from different cultures.

In 2012, she enrolled in a college in Virginia, but didn’t feel like it was diverse enough for her. She decided to transfer out and chose Northeastern for its diversity and the co-op program.

“I believe I grow the best through challenges at times, and I felt the co-op program would really allow me to see how it would be to be a full-time employee before I graduate,” she says.

While at Northeastern she was an adviser and the president of Northeastern African Student Organization. She graduated from the D’Amore-McKim School of Business in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and business administration.

Her first job was in corporate communication. In 2018, Ikomi moved from Boston to Brooklyn, New York, where she currently resides.

When both Temidola Ikomi and her sister Ama Ikomi graduated from college in 2017, the women in her family decided that it was time to start a fashion business back in Nigeria.

Ama Ikomi went to New York University Stern School of Business and took on the accounting and finance of their new company. Temidola Ikomi focused on marketing and advertising. Their younger sister Anire Ikomi, a graduate of Parsons School of Design, helps with the brand’s public image.

The day-to-day operation of the business is overseen by their mother, Abby Ikomi, who is the creative director of Irawo and lives in Lagos full-time.

Photographer sorry for 'small eyes' Dior picture

Chen Man's photo showed a woman who some Chinese netizens said perpetuated Western stereotypes of Asian faces. To get more news about 国产欧美va天堂在线观看视频, you can visit our official website.

"I blame myself for my immaturity and ignorance [in my past works]," Ms Chen, 41, wrote on social platform Weibo.Dior said the photo, which was recently displayed at a Shanghai exhibition, has since been removed.

"Dior, as always, respects the sentiments of the Chinese people... If any errors happen, [Dior] must be open to receiving feedback and correct them in time," the fashion house wrote on its Weibo account on Wednesday evening, adding that the work was an artwork and not a commercial advertisement.

The photo first went on display on 12 November, but immediately sparked a backlash from some netizens - habitual users of the internet - and then local media outlets.

Fair skin and large eyes are typically considered ideal beauty features in China - and advertisements more commonly feature models with such features.

In contrast, an editorial by the Beijing Daily described the model in the Dior photo as having a "gloomy face" and sinister eyes".

"For years, Asian women have always appeared with small eyes and freckles from the Western perspective," said the editorial. "The photographer is playing up to the brands, or the aesthetic tastes of the western world."

Chinese social media users echoed this, Ms Chen's photos were an "insulting" portrayal of what those in the West believed Chinese women looked like."This is how Western people think we look," said one user on Weibo, adding that Chen Man had played up to this. Many added that they would boycott the luxury brand.

Meanwhile, a commentary by China Women's News said that the image of the model with "swollen single eyelids" made people feel "uncomfortable".

Some Chinese Internet users pointed out that the photo was reminiscent of Ms Chen's photo series dated 2012, which she had shot for i-D Magazine. But not all agreed. Some stood up for Ms Chen, with one Weibo user saying: "Why can't a Chinese woman with small eyes also be considered beautiful? I don't see any problem with this."

In her statement on Wednesday, Ms Chen said that she had "reflected deeply" and felt compelled to issue an apology after examining "nearly every negative comment" about her artwork.

"I was born and raised in China. I deeply love my country. As an artist, I'm totally aware of my responsibility to document Chinese culture and showcase Chinese beauty through my work," she said.

"I will educate myself on Chinese history, attend more relevant events, and improve my ideologies... I will strive to tell China's story right through my work."

Ms Chen is a well-known photographer in the Chinese fashion world. She has shot covers for top magazine titles and has photographed celebrities David Beckham and Fan Bingbing.

Here’s BLACKPINK’s Style Evolution

BLACKPINK is the (fashion) revolution! Ever since the K-pop group’s debut in 2016, the quartet — Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rosé — has thrilled fans with their music, their personalities and, of course, their style. To get more news about 国产毛片高清一级国语, you can visit our official website.

While BLACKPINK’S commitment to fashion has never wavered, the group’s aesthetic has changed and matured throughout their historic, record-breaking career. When they first burst onto the scene with hits like “Whistle” and “Boombayah,” the girls favored bold, punchy streetwear with bright pops of color and cute schoolgirl-leaning ensembles. (Just look, for example, at Jisoo and Lisa pleated skirts or Rosé’s fishnet tee emblazoned with “Beyond the Kawaii” in the “Boombayah” music video.)

In other appearances, the foursome relied heavily on wearing coordinated outfits in matching colors, the tried-and-true method of many a girl group that came before them — from Destiny’s Child and Fifth Harmony to TWICE and TLC.

However, as BLACKPINK’s music reached new heights, so did their sartorial choices. By the time they graced their first Billboard cover in 2019, Rosé, Lisa, Jennie and Jisoo had leveled up their style, rocking high fashion and developing their own styles as individuals. Their groundbreaking appearance at Coachella that April also showed off their elevated onstage looks, wearing coordinated ensembles of black, white and silver encrusted with jewels, glitter, beading and more.

Cut to 2022 and the girls are known as fashion superstars, whether Jisoo’s sitting front row at the Dior show for Paris Fashion Week or Jennie plastered on billboards around the globe modeling for Calvin Klein. Meanwhile, Lisa’s been profiled in CR Fashion Book as Celine’s first global ambassador under creative director Hedi Slimane and Rosé is the face of both Yves Saint Laurent and Tiffany & Co.

fashion’s “Girl with the Golden Legs”, is making history

I feel like I have a job to do. I want to see women being protected, and I want what happened to me to never happen to another soul again,” says Lauren Wasser from her home in Los Angeles. Ten years ago to this day, the model came down with toxic shock syndrome, which eventually caused her to undergo a double leg amputation – today she is in Paris preparing to walk at the Fashion Week shows. “I could have been in the ground for 10 years now. But here I am, and I feel like I’m on top of the world.”To get more news about 亚洲欧美在线一区中文字幕, you can visit our official website.

In 2012, Wasser was an athletic 24-year-old living in Santa Monica, California, the statuesque daughter of two former models who had turned down a full basketball scholarship to a top university for sporting talent to focus on her own rising career in fashion. But life took an unpredictable turn in early October, when she started to feel unwell, as though she were coming down with the flu. She attended a friend’s birthday party but left early; soon after, a concerned friend found her unconscious on her bedroom floor.
She was rushed to the hospital with a high temperature; her internal organs had begun to shut down and she had suffered a heart attack. By the time she was diagnosed with toxic shock syndrome (TSS), she had only a one percent chance of survival. The infection caused her legs to become gangrenous, and she was put into a medically induced coma.

When she woke up, disorientated, the ordeal was far from over. “There was a moment when I was by myself in hospital and everyone who had come to visit me had left my room – my mum, my godfather, everyone,” she remembers, “and I heard the nurse speaking on the phone behind the curtain, saying, ‘I have a 24-year-old girl here who’s going to need a right leg below-the-knee amputation.’ That was the first time I ever heard the word ‘amputation’ in reference to myself. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t want to believe it. I cried and screamed for my mum to not allow it to happen.” At the time, her doctors had recommended amputating both legs, but there was a 50 per cent chance her left leg could be saved, so she took the risk.

After she was released from hospital, she spent eight months in a wheelchair. “I couldn’t just get up and go to the bathroom, I couldn’t go outside and play basketball, I couldn’t do anything for myself. My whole identity, the person I knew, was completely gone,” she recalls, adding that her belief in God and her loved ones were essential supports throughout. “I’ve come all this way through my faith and through the strength of my family and my friends. My family stood by me when things got rough and really lifted me up. My little brother, who was 13 at the time, is a big reason why I didn’t take my own life. I couldn’t have him find me when he was coming home from school, then live with that burden for the rest of his life. I wanted to show him that no matter what happens, you just have to make the best out of things.”
Gradually, Wasser was able to walk again using a prosthetic leg, but her sense of self was shattered – so friends and family took countless pictures of her to help her come to terms with her new body. “When I saw images or videos that my mum or my friends had taken of me, it was eye-opening because I realised that I do look beautiful, I do look strong. I had been in my own head and standing in my own way, creating this idea of myself that didn’t exist. I thought I couldn’t walk properly, but it was a mindfuck because it wasn’t true.”

While doctors had initially salvaged her left leg, it caused her so much pain in the six years that followed that she had no choice but to have it amputated too, just before she turned 30. “I didn’t have any toes and my heel was so severely damaged, I had to go to the clinic every Monday. I just wasn’t living,” she says. “I’m an athlete, I want to be a mum, and I just wanted to be able to be free and be able to sit down and not have excruciating pain. I made that decision for the rest of my life, to be able to live the life that I know I deserve.”

Zelenska’s Vogue Photoshoot Sparks ‘Sit Like A Girl’ Photo Trend

Thousands of Ukrainian women are posing for photographs seated with their legs apart in support of the wartorn country’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska, after she was targeted with criticism following her divisive Vogue photoshoot with Annie Leibowitz. To get more news about 中文字幕日韩欧美一区二区三区, you can visit our official website.

Zelenska’s photoshoot with her husband and Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky came under fire with many feeling the glossy Vogue cover was inappropriate during the Russian invasion.

However, Zelenska was particularly singled out for criticism in regards to a photograph showing her sitting on a step with her legs apart and leaning with her elbows on her knees — with critics describing the First Lady’s pose as “unfeminine” and “too manly.”Ukrainian journalist, Zoya Zvynyatskivska called out the misogynistic backlash against Zelenska and started the #SitLikeAGirl hashtag on Instagram — encouraging other women to sit in the same pose in support of the First Lady.

In a matter of days, thousands of women joined the initiative — including Leibovitz, who shared her support for it by posting the hashtag on her Instagram stories. Ukrainian police officers, artists, journalists and players from the country’s women’s football club FC Kryvbas, were among the individuals who posed in solidarity with Zelenska, reports the Kyiv Post.“Many Ukrainian women were appalled by society’s attempt to tell women which pose they are allowed to take,” Zvynyatskivska tells the Kyiv Post.

Zelenska and Zelensky featured in a digital edition of Vogue, which focused mainly on Olena, titled “Portrait of Bravery: Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska.” The images were shot by famed photographer Lebowitz who traveled to Ukraine to photograph the presidential couple inside their compound in Mariinsky Palace on the outskirts of Kyiv.

The photoshoot was met with mixed feedback. Some praised the pair for continuing to raise the profile of the conflict as Mr Zelenskyy pleads for global support for Ukraine. Others criticized them for posing for the fashion magazine during wartime.
