“I couldn’t fit into anything in the usual shops, but plus-size clothes from overseas brands made me look like I was swimming in them,” she said.
“Also, whatever was on offer in the plus-size market at that time was dismal – there were dowdy and expensive plus-size clothes in department stores made for women much older than me, or cheap and poor quality ones. I simply wanted clothes in which I could communicate visually to the world who I am.”Similarly, the founders of another homegrown plus-size boutique Be You Co, Phyllis Tan and Jasmine Neo – all self-described “curvy girls” – started their label when they found it challenging to find affordable, flattering and well-made womenswear.
In Singapore, most female clothing stores usually only cater up to XL, or UK 10 to 12. We’ve seen a rise in regular stores trying to be inclusive, and bringing in XXL or UK 14 clothes," said Tan.
"However, most of these clothes are not very true to size and usually only fit regular sized ladies with a slightly bigger built. Torrid, an apparel company for women who wear sizes 10 to 30, shares rose 15% closing at $24.15. The City of Industry-based company trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker "CURV" priced its IPO of 11 million shares at $21 each, putting the company at a $2.3 billion valuation.
In 2020, Torrid generated $974 million in net sales, slightly lower than its 2019 sales because some of its stores closed during the pandemic, while its online sales grew.
The apparel company is designing for women aged 25 to 40 years old who are looking for stylish, sexy clothing that fits well.
It is part of the growing movement to focus less on size 0 models and to promote body positivity, female empowerment and style, regardless of size.
"Growing celebration of femininity, inclusivity and self-identity, along with the emergence of plus-size celebrities and influencers, inspires young curvy customers to demand more flattering and stylish clothing they are proud to wear," Torrid wrote in its prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The company described its products as delivering "a superior fit for the curvy woman that makes her love the way she looks and feels."
Plus-size apparel and intimates are an $85 billion market in the U.S., Torrid estimates. And as of 2019, two-thirds of all women in the U.S. wore plus-size clothing.
Victoria's Secret, which has been criticized for its lack of diversity in models, announced last month it was retiring it's "Angels" and replacing them with women such as soccer star Megan Rapinoe, actress and tech investor Priyanka Chopra Jones and Paloma Elsesser, a plus-size model and inclusivity advocate.
Torrid said surveys have found that 69% of plus-size women find it difficult to find clothes that fit well and are stylish. Many clothing companies use a "grading up" method, offering their regular sized clothes in larger sizes rather than design clothes for a curvy body.
"Through our product and brand experience, we connect with customers in a way that other brands, many of which treat plus-size customers as an afterthought, have not," the company wrote.
Torrid did not respond to a request for comment, but believes plus-size women would spend more on clothing if they had more options.

A press release from Cainiao on Thursday said the air freight, operating over six times weekly, will ship parcels from China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub, where Cainiao's local partners will take over and complete the last mile delivery.
Cainiao said the air cargo route is expected to reduce the days of normal door-to-door delivery service between China and Nigeria from more than 60 days to about 20 days.
"As one of Cainiao's key emerging markets, Africa has witnessed a booming demand from local consumers purchasing items such as apparel, home appliances and electronic accessories from China," Cainiao said.
The launch of the air cargo route will support the surge in trade volume and rise of e-commerce in Africa, with the African e-commerce market projected to reach about 34.6 billion U.S. dollars by 2024, an average annual growth rate of 17.1 percent, according to Cainao.
"The newly launched air cargo route is a further expansion of Cainiao's global cross-border parcel network and demonstrates our ability to leverage industry partnerships to aggregate resources to mitigate disruptions while enhancing overall logistics efficiency," said William Xiong, Cainiao's chief strategist and general manager of export logistics.
